Probably because they are in SM. There are so many artists this company is juggling, many of them being in the same sub-genre of kpop, sharing the same production team and fans. It would be economically disastrous for SM to plan for multiple comebacks at once. 

Personally, as much as I would love to have my dear EXO comeback every month, I’d rather prefer quality over quantity. One of my pet peeves for album releases is for them to include those mediocre, lukewarm filler songs. I really have no uses for them other than background noise while I’m doing house-cleaning or something… lol All 6 songs on EXO’s debut EP have been unique in that each boasts a different tone, style, and character. The production quality of each song are so calculated and precise, vocal processing so meticulous, that each one could’ve been a lead single. If some of those gorgeous sounds we’ve heard on their 23 teasers are indications of what’s to come next for EXO, I will endure this tedious wait for a quality album with no filler songs.

You are absolutely right~! The ceremony organizers said it themselves in various interviews.

This newcomer award ceremony was created 5 years ago to encourage and nurture new artists. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure the continuous growth and transformation of Chinese music. This is the only program catered specifically to rookies in China.  Compared to the rapid overturn rate of kpop artists in spotlight, popular cpop artists tend to stay in the spotlight for a longer period of time, just look at the one-decade+ record of Jay Chou, Jolin Tsai, Faye Wong, JJ Lin, S.H.E….etc. While we all appreciate the time-proven talents of these veteran artists, it can be quite difficult for new talents to find their niches. EXO-M has been the exception, no other newcomers in the past have been on every single web interviews, entertainment shows, and magazines in merely 5 months of time. EXO-M may already have an advantage at debut for being a SM group, and their quirky personalities, dashing looks, and solid singing/dancing foundation certainly contribute to their unprecedented soaring popularity. Which is why they’ve won those awards! :-D But for other artists, this annual newcomer awards ceremony is a valuable opportunity to seize and showcase their talents.
